What is Cross Browser Testing?

Cross browser testing is a method of quality assurance for websites and mobile apps across multiple browsers and platforms.

It ensures quality and functionality, as well as a best-in-class usability, for all users and all platforms of your digital product. Standard test approaches include different screen sizes and different browser and operating system (OS) combinations.

Cross browser tests are standard for web developers and have a massive impact in the field of conversion rate optimization, as well as for all business related KPIs.

Why is Cross Browser Testing Important?

There used to be only a few browsers across the Internet back in the day. However, now web developers are facing a broad diversity of devices, screen sizes, and resolutions plus different browsers and operating systems.

This was already a challenge in the past with its waterfall-based development model with a quarterly or monthly change of software. Modern agile development methods with rapid and more frequent code changes have increased the challenge for development teams.

Today’s consumers are online on a broad variety of devices, ranging from desktop computers, laptops, mobile phones and tablets to smart TVs and IoT devices. This always online world has also increased the expectations from your customers – they expect a best-in-class user and shopping experience from your application.

How do you ensure an optimal user experience for all of your customers?

All modern web and mobile browsers respond to code changes slightly differently. The introduction of HTML5 sorted out a big chunk of issues, but with every code change there’s always a risk that one of the many browser/device/OS combinations won’t respond as it should.

Accessibility, user experience, quality, and performance can all vary from browser to browser, as each one renders CSS, HTML, and JavaScript differently. That’s why developers and business owners learn to only aim at a subset of browsers and devices and optimize their web page for exactly that subset.

While about half of your users will use the most popular, low-risk browsers like Chrome, Safari, or Firefox, bugs will usually be more prevalent in high-risk browsers like Internet Explorer. Though it may be unrealistic to test on each and every browser platform, it’s important to increase the amount of supported browsers. The more browsers you’ve tested on and optimized for, the more inclusive and accessible your site will be.

How to perform cross browser testing

The Gap Analysis

You need to know which browsers you want to optimize for – this is where your analytics come into play.

Which browsers are used by your target audience? Which browsers have the biggest share of sales in your webshop? Based on this analysis you can see where you have gaps and where you might need to invest more testing effort.

Automated or Manual?

Choose the right type of testing for your needs – automated testing or manual testing. Both test methodologies have their pros and cons. There are a lot of cross browser testing tools on the market to help you with automated testing.

Test automation does have some disadvantages. The most important one is that they mostly use emulated browser versions on virtual machines. Since they’re emulations, they don’t fully show the true behavior of a browser. Also, broader and more intense test approaches are difficult to handle in an automated setup.

Manual testing with real users and real devices gives you valuable feedback based on true behavior. Our managed approach also allows for more flexibility and wider scope in the test setup.
