Better Webshop
with Beter Bed

For the prototype evaluation, 21 testers were selected with a wide age range, but the focus was on testers over 35 as requested by Beter Bed. The selected testers used 17 different devices, including Mac and Windows desktop computers and various versions of iOS and Android smartphones. This broad base allowed the prototype to be tested on different systems to ensure maximum functionality.

Client's needs

With 84 stores in the Netherlands and another 17 in Belgium, Beter Bed is a success story throughout the Benelux. But their success doesn’t come from selling someone a single bed, it comes from creating a positive, holistic experience – in-store and online. One that ensures customers keep coming back, even if it might be years later.

This is what our website testing solutions had been helping them with before. But Beter Bed approached us with something different. A prototype for a new online shop.

Our crowdtesters were asked to compare the navigation structure of the new prototype against the current online shop. In addition, they were asked for their opinion on a new part of the site – ‘advice and inspiration’ – where they wanted to create content about what beds suit you best, sleep problems, sleeping tips, styling tips, and more.

Ultimately, Beter Bed’s goal was to increase awareness of their product range, increase overall customer satisfaction, and improve the quality of sleep of their customers.

Test setup

For the prototype evaluation, 21 testers were selected with a wide age range, but the focus was on testers over 35 as requested by Beter Bed. The selected testers used 17 different devices, including Mac and Windows desktop computers and various versions of iOS and Android smartphones. This broad base allowed the prototype to be tested on different systems to ensure maximum functionality.

The testers then worked on different use cases where they had to find specific beds in the prototype version and in the existing online shop. They also had to evaluate how clear the layout and menu structure were, whether it was clear which products Beter Bed offered, and how easy it was to find the products they were looking for.

Results

On average, our crowdtesters rated the prototype better than the existing website.

They also found it easiest to find the desired products on the smartphone version of the prototype. A clear area of improvement was found on the desktop version of the existing online shop, where some testers could not find specific products.

Regarding the menu structure, nearly all of them rated the prototype – both desktop and mobile – better with a greater use of images, a clearer structure of the navigation with submenus, and fewer click options.

Beter Bed mockup

The new “advice and inspiration“ section was well received, and there was valuable feedback for improvement. For example, that products displayed in this section should have direct links and that it had to be clearer whether the products shown were available for purchase.

Overall, crowdtesters felt that the prototype gave a better overview of Beter Bed‘s product range. This was a clear sign that Beter Bed’s new prototype was heading in the right direction.

Along with our ongoing work with Beter Bed, which also has a strong focus on functionality and usability, we were able to provide valuable feedback and detailed reports.

All of which led to an improvement in customer satisfaction and, exactly what Beter Bed wanted, increasing loyalty to their products and brand.
