The Future of Testing

Retail has faced unprecedented challenges this past year (and counting).

Over the past two weeks we looked at two current trends in the world of software, Industry 4.0 and testing the Internet of Things. On a societal level, these are two major developments that will change our daily lives as well as the workplace in the coming years. Not so long ago, typical challenges associated with software testing could be sufficiently managed internally. Next to the traditional lack of resources (time & budget) and blindness to the faults of our own products, there was only a limited amount of desktop browsers you had to test for. Then came the era of mobile devices which, mildly put, complicated things a lot. Suddenly we had multiple operating systems, devices, screen sizes and locations (of course the lack of resources remained on top of that, too).

Crowdtesting as a problem solver
Crowdtesting, in a very short time, has become a major tool to tackle these challenges and we at Testbirds deeply believe in leveraging the user as a tester in different stages of the development life cycle, both for functional as well as usability & user experience testing. With more than 300,000 testers and 500,000+ devices worldwide we address those challenges on a daily basis together with our clients. While many companies are still in the process of creating their mobile testing strategies, trends like Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things are creating a new set of obstacles, especially in terms of testing. More and more things that used to be offline are becoming smart and start communicating with our mobile devices, the internet and amongst each other. Smart home, connected car and wearables are some key terms in this next cycle of products that will shape our daily lives. Can my smart toothbrush communicate with my iPhone or will other Bluetooth devices interfere? Does the new running app track my progress reliably even if I switch from LTE to a public hotspot during the workout?
Many of these challenges have one question in common: Will it work out there in the real world?
At Testbirds, it is our ambitious goal to answer that question and to meet each of those challenges with a corresponding testing solution. Crowdtesting is part of the answer, but there’s still a piece of the puzzle missing. Very soon, we are going to update our portfolio in order to offer companies an even bigger set of innovative testing services in form of a Device Cloud. This will enable them to create a whole new level of quality for their applications.Stay tuned!
