Meet our 100,000th Tester: João

What is it like to start as a new bird in our nest?Testbirds recently crossed the 100,000 testers milestone and we invite everybody to celebrate with us! Our latest tester Joao, for example, has already joined the festivities. Learn all about the young Creative Media student’s affection towards rainy days, what the obstacles you might encounter at airports are and why testing with Testbirds is an exciting opportunity!

Hi João! Tell us a little bit about yourself!

My name is João Firmo, I’m 18 years old and I was born in Lisbon, Portugal. One year ago, I moved to the UK to start a degree in Creative Media, and in the meantime, I work in an Art Gallery/Concert Venue as a Production Assistant and Sound Engineer. I’m a bit of an introvert, even though I can be really communicative when I’m with people I’m comfortable with, and my main interest is music, listening, exploring, experimenting and creating. I like to read a lot, to experiment with my computer, and I really love rainy days.

How did you find out about Testbirds and why did you decide to become a tester?

I found out about Testbirds through a friend that had also heard of it, but never tried it. I decided to explore and found the opportunities it has to offer to be really interesting, as I have a lot of interest in web design and computing by itself. As a foreign student in the UK, a little extra money is really helpful, and earning it by doing something that I actually enjoy is something that is not easy to find.

What do you like about being a tester at Testbirds so far?

It is a really pleasant experience. The interface in which I work is easy to use, and everything I have to do is well explained, every step of the way. I see this almost as a hobby, as I enjoy doing what I have to do for Testbirds. The Bird Masters have proven to be really helpful, and everything has worked perfectly so far. PLUS: being the 100,000th tester makes me feel all excited! When I created my account, I had no idea I was joining something this big- I am looking forward to seeing how much the Nest is yet to grow.

What apps or gadgets can’t you live without and why?

I have four gadgets I can’t live without: my computer, from where I do most of my work; my iPad mini, which I use as a second computer when I’m on the move; my smartphone that I mostly use as a camera; and my old iPod Classic, which is filled to the limit with my massive collection of music. All four decorated with gaffer tape. Why? Last year, when I came back to Portugal for Christmas, I had to catch a connecting flight in Brussels, Belgium. I was supposed to have one hour to make the connection, but the flight from the UK was delayed, and it left me with 15 minutes to change flights. I had to run from one side of the airport to the other (Brussels airport is HUGE), and unfortunately my backpack was poorly closed, and it opened when I was running to the gate dropping my laptop and all my gadgets on the floor. I can say that I for sure learned my lesson about trusting backpacks.

What is your future plan at Testbirds from today onwards?

My plan is to do as many tests as I can, learning everything I can from each of them, and to improve all my skills in testing, debugging and computing as much as I can. I still have a lot (really, a LOT) to learn and to improve, but I see it as an opportunity to grow as a person and a professional, and to learn more skills that may be helpful to my future.

Is there anything you want to ask us?

I actually have one question in mind – What do you have to do to become a Birdmaster? It seems a really cool job to have!Hi João! Thanks for asking. Birdmasters at Testbirds are in charge of anything test or tester related. Project and Community Managers working at Testbirds are called Birdmasters. The Birdmasters you meet during the entry test are Community Managers, like myself. We make sure that the tester registration runs smoothly and help out testers with their first questions on the platform. During a real test, you’ll meet Project Managers. They run the tests and review the submitted reports and bugs. Then, they present all the findings to the client and discuss how the product can be improved based on the suggestions the testers gave. We are always dealing with new and exciting products, and welcoming testers from all over the world. You’re right, it is a really cool job to have! – Josephine Note: Currently we are also working on a new concept to certify testers to do real Birdmaster tasks. Of course, it is still top secret 😉 So stay tuned!
