Machine learning – The next big thing in QA and testing?

We at Testbirds believe that there are always new things to learn and keep your brains busy with. This is why we not only have a “Bird University” for our employees where we discuss interesting topics every month, but also keep up with the newest research and trends in the QA and testing industry. We like to stay ahead of new developments and we see it as our task to always have a look-out for the newest trends and evolve our services along with them.As the World Quality Report 17-18 as well as the State of Testing Survey 2017 outline, there are many trends underway in the testing industry: Development cycles will become even shorter, mobile and hybrid application testing will become priority number one and test automation will be dominating. But what is the next big thing?

What is it that might take QA and testing to a new level? Many experts agree on that machine learning will have a huge impact on software testing. We know that smart software and machine learning already have become a big part of our daily lives, so it is not surprising that it also will influence QA and testing. Today, social networks use machine learning to mine personal information and select relevant ads to show and Siri is helping us to dictate important messages with its smart speech recognition.

Machine learning applies artificial intelligence to provide systems the ability to automatically learn without human intervention or explicit programming. Systems and testing automation would improve from experience and would automatically access data, run tests with it and learn from the results and improve the testing cycle.

Tools such as machine learning derive patterns from operations data and enable the analysis of huge amounts of data. It is expected to deliver more accurate results in less time and provide effective ways to test IoT solutions and many more upcoming technologies. The derived patterns will also lead to the generation of synthetic and artificial test data which will improve test cases and testing in general.

Relating to the future of testing machine learning and therefore smart QA definitely have the potential to become the next big thing and everyone should have a keen eye for upcoming developments. We at Testbirds already provide good solutions for test automation and are looking forward to exploring new opportunities for our service portfolio as well as see how machine learning will impact on the world of testing.
