How We Became a FOCUS Revenue Growth Champion: A Brief Company History

Testbirds is “FOCUS Wachstumschampion 2018”, which means we are one of 500 companies with the highest revenue growth in Germany! The German news magazine FOCUS and the statistics and market research portal Statista analysed German companies and their revenue growth in the years 2013 to 2016. With a yearly growth of 93%, we made it to number 9 in the category “IT, Software and Services”.This is something we are very proud of and now is a good opportunity to look back at what we’ve achieved in the past 5+ years.growth-revenue-champion 2011“Crowdtesting” was born: Philipp Benkler and Georg Hansbauer had the idea of combining classical software testing with the flexibility of crowdsourcing. In December of the same year, the two brought in Philipp’s schoolmate Markus Steinhauser and then quickly moved into an office in the East of Munich, where they handled their very first client order.2012While working hard on their client base and on the first test platform, they got support in form of the EXIST entrepreneurship scholarship by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. This also led to the founding of the Testbirds GmbH in June 2012.Further backing came from the finance network “BayStartup” which supported us securing a seven-figure injection by the “Walther Beteiligungen und Immobilien AG”.Meanwhile, more and more people joined the Testbirds team and the company moved to a bigger office in beautiful Munich-Schwabing in August 2012. Shortly after, the website was relaunched as well as the test platform, which got its current name: Nest.2013The efforts paid off: Testbirds established itself as a market leader for crowdtesting in the D-A-CH region and won the European Software Testing Award 2013 for the “Best Crowd Project”.Other companies got interested in Testbirds’ business model, which led to the launch of a franchise in Budapest, Hungary.2014The Testbirds team outgrew its office once again with now more than 20 employees and had to move to its current office near the Theresienwiese. What followed was a year full of technological developments: Testbirds launched two new services for its clients, Birdflight and TestChameleon™ – a big step for the young company. When Testbirds secured a new investment round of 2.1 million Euro, led by the French venture capital firm Seventure Partners, it was time to think even bigger.2015After focusing on the German speaking markets in the first couple of years, Testbirds started to expand into further European markets by opening offices in Amsterdam and London, and entering the Italian market through a partner company, CS InIT.With a growing community of testers, it was about time to promote the concept of crowdworking on a broader basis: In July, Testbirds initiated the Code of Conduct, a guideline for a fair cooperation between companies, clients and crowdworkers.Only one month later, in August 2015, Testbirds reached the milestone of 100.000 testers.2016The third round of investment of two million Euro was led by the venture capital companies EXTOREL, b-to-v, and Seventure Partners in February. At the same time, the new strategy “Testing 4.0 – The Next Generation of Quality” was introduced. This was not just a new slogan, but an extension of the portfolio to 20+ united under a single platform. Clients could get access to all services and benefit from the diverse synergy between crowd and cloud technologies.According to Google, McKinsey and Rocket Internet, this strategy paid off: They ranked Testbirds among the Top 10 B2B scale-ups in the framework of the Digital Top 50 Awards. In the same year, Testbirds launched its second franchise in Moscow with a Russian IT company.2017This year, the Testbirds family got a new member: The Swedish office was opened in February – hej Stockholm!Furthermore, Testbirds we launched a newly developed testing solution, the Global Real Device Network (GRDN). This service allows companies and organisations to test their applications and software on real Android smartphones and tablets around the world.Because Testbirds always works on providing innovative testing solutions, the company has been awarded with the “Deutsche Innovationspreis” in the category “Start-ups” in April, a price for trend-setting companies by Accenture, EnBW and the German business magazine WirtschaftsWoche. With more than 250,000 testers in 193 countries and clients like Deutsche Telekom, Audi, Allianz or Deutsche Bahn, Testbirds gets closer to its aim becoming the world’s leading company for innovative software testing solutions. And now Testbirds is the proud winners of the “FOCUS Wachstumschampion 2018”. We are looking forward to what the future will bring!Share it if you like it:Tag CloudAbout the authorJulia supports the marketing team and takes care of our social media channels.CategoriesLinksOther content that might be interesting for you:Testbirds specialises in the testing of software such as apps, websites and Internet of Things applications by using innovative technologies and solutions.
