Ultraportable, high-capacity data storage and available in various colors – Thinking about USB flash drives? Me, too. But around 15 years ago this was an accurate description of a Floppy disk. They were the means of data transfer back when the Internet couldn’t be accessed without the peculiar modem dialup tone (if you had internet access at all). The most commonly used floppy disks were 3.5″ and had a storage capacity of 1,44/1,4 MB. That’s just enough for a short mp3 (low-quaility). Alternatively, you could save one 3.1 megapixel jpeg image. How many floppy disks would it take to equal 1 Gigabyte? The answer is 711 (3.5″ 1,4 MB), which would pose the slight issue of storing the disks themselves. TechRepublic has posted some nice illustrations of this. And while floppy disks are now obsolete in our daily lives, they are still used by some people. For example by the US government. By the way, the “save” icon that you know from so many software programs actually represents a floppy disc. Kind of ironic, don’t you think?
