Smart Devices Put to Test – Software Testing in the Internet of Things

by | Mar 28, 2018 | News & Infos, Trends in Software Testing | 0 comments

Light bulbs, toothbrushes, watches, and even toys: Nowadays, more and more everyday items are connected to the internet. However, the quality of these products often doesn’t match the customers’ expectations – therefore, testing smart devices before their launch is essential.

The question is: What needs to be considered when testing IoT systems?

  • The lack of technological standards makes IoT systems prone to errors and security breaches. That’s why the interaction of the different components needs to be tested thoroughly.
  • Smart devices need to provide real additional value for the users. You need to find out what your target group really wants, otherwise your product won’t succeed on the market.
  • Reality check: Most bugs appear when customers use the product for the first time. Testing with real users helps to find the bugs before the launch.
  • Keep it simple! Smart devices should make the life of the users easier, so usability is key in the Internet of Things.
