I’m Diego and this is my role at Testbirds

My Role at Testbirds is a series of blog posts that gives insights into the daily life at the office. Every so often, one of our employees will introduce you to his or her line of work and share some helpful tips. This week actually features someone not working from one of our European offices, but from his own at the other side of the world. Diego Yungh does some amazing front-end development for our websites and the Nest. Origin/Background: I’m from São Paulo, Brazil. I came from a small town in Minas Gerais called Patrocínio, which gave me an old-fashioned educational model. My dev background is a little messy, since I started developing with Assembly on a prototype board with a PIC16F, then passed through C, C++, C#, PHP and Python, until I decided to become a web developer. What you do at Testbirds: I’m the website guy. I spend my time researching about front-end trends, reusable technologies and nice looking designs for our nest and side projects. I’m also a Javascript ninja, but keep that as a secret. Everything that concerns the visible part of the Nest and/or other projects under our care will probably be developed by me.Current Computer: Dell Inspiron 5348-A20 (All-in-One with bluetooth mouse and keyboard), i5 processor, 8GB DDR3, 1TB SATA and Video Graphics (AMD Radeon R7 A265 2GB DDR3). Next to that, a Notebook HP Pavillion DV4 as my private server for Testbirds projects.Current mobile device: I actually use three: a Moto G 2nd generation, a Galaxy 4S Zoom & an iPad2.One phrase that best describes how you work: “Hey! Do you know what time it is now? It’s lunch time!” (I say it every day, I actually work smiling and making jokes.)A typical work day consists of: I start with my extra coffee with no sugar. Then I prepare tasks, estimations, e-mail feedbacks, read and answer requests and prepare for the daily meeting. After that, it’s time to dig on code and make some funny or not so funny jokes. What apps/software/tools can’t you live without? My bank account manager app. Really, going to a bank here in Brazil is a mess. What’s your work setup like?  It’s a little strange and messy. See for yourself:Diego's setupWhat’s your best time-saving shortcut? Do it slow, but do it once. It’s the best time-saving technique.Besides your phone and computer, what gadget can’t you live without (and why)? No more gadgets, hahaha! Really, I just bought a nice phone because I needed one for mobile development. What everyday thing are you better at than everyone else? What’s your secret? Multitasking. I can keep moving foward with 2-3 tasks in parallel while answering e-mails superfast and making jokes at the same time. My secret is a good coffee and a wife that takes care of everything else, so I can focus on my work. So, I would say, also thanks to my wife and coffee. What do you like to do outside work? I like many things not involving technology actually. I play some musical instruments like guitar, conga, berimbau, viola. I also like to cook different things. I enjoy playing with my daughters (three nice dogs), I love nature and going out with my wife to try new types of food, or to travel aimlessly. And next to all those things, I also spend a lot of time on my two religions not well known overseas: Aumbandhan and Candomblé.What’s the best advice/life motto you’ve ever heard?I have this written on my room’s wall: “The best parts of you, the parts that will be remembered, usually have nothing to do with your job. You should give your job your best, but don’t make the best part of you your job.”If you could meet anyone, dead or alive, who would it be? José Mujica, president of Uruguay. He is a example by himself, research about him and you will see.Anything else to add that might be interesting to others? A few fun facts, make your pick:

  • I’m self-taught on everything I do.
  • I love many artisan things like engineering, architecture, goldsmithing.
  • Before I started programming, I used to work as a welder.
  • My mother is a psychologist and my father is an engineer, so this might explain a few things.
  • Until last year I had a Nokia 110.
  • I do not own any video games (but I am a ninja with Guitar Hero).
  • I’m a RPG fan and player (table RPG).
